Matei Vişniec s-a remarcat în anii ’80 ca poet, apoi ca dramaturg ale cărui piese, cu largă circulaţie în mediul literar, sunt interzise pe scenele profesioniste. În 1987 părăseşte România şi se stabileşte în Franţa, unde lucrează pentru Radio France Internationale. Piesele sale în limba franceză apar la „Actes Sud – Papiers”, „Lansman”, „Non Lieu”, „Espace d’un instant”, „L’Oeil du Prince”. Numele său figurează pe afişe teatrale în peste 40 de ţări.
